If emerge is grabbing stuff from the internet, it certainly could
exceed 17GB (sources + binaries + any packages left lying about).
Full source (*src.deb) is ~150GB. That's not counting any
intermediate files left laying around in a build.
(think *.o plus *.a + *.so for libs)
