The gentoo folks would probably greatly appreciate error output
even if you don't plan on using gentoo or have time to help them
debug issues.

Which install image did you start with?

It is likely you need to download and burn a different CD-ROM image.
The installer generally will not have all the sources on one CD.
In general, I prefer to have net access to download sources
though I understand that's not possible at all installations.

A500 uses a _SCSI_ CD/DVD drive and thus shouldn't have any of the
"SuckyIO" issues that plague the parisc workstations.

Please save and post a500 console output.

ie "dmesg" from the system *after* it has failed to find the cd/dvdrom.
The debian installer has an "execute shell" to invoke an interactive
shell where you can (hopefully) dump the console output.
(If not, use the ^B and "CL" command at the MP prompt to dump it).
