I agree with that assessment. The phrase "open mailing list" is
nowadays synonymous with "open firewall". Sure, I loved the days when I
had telnet and rsh servers and machines directly connected to the
internet with no firewalls at all. I agree that the factors that forced
security lockdowns, in a perfect world, should never have happened. But
they have and now we have to deal with it.
My children use my computer sometimes. The type of stuff that appears
on this list is, in many cases, unmitigated filth. I want to remain
subscribed to a technical mailing list. I shouldn't have to unsubscribe
or bar my children from my computer because of what they might see if I
leave my email client running.
This also reflects on the credibility of the mailing list and the
project. Low volume mailing lists with high volumes of spam are often
attributed to dead projects.
Forcing registration before posting does not affect the openness of the
list as long as anyone can register, but it is proven to cut spam by a
very large margin.
I would ask whomever made this decision to reconsider.
