This one won't work.  Several machines have RS232 #1 after RS232 #2 in
the iotree.

I thought of a #5 which won't work too:

5. Always pick up the lasi serial port first.  This doesn't work for
the J2240 which has port #1 on cujo and port #2 on dino.
