Looks like the nm/awk alignment stuff has been broken for a while.  The
awk appeared to be parsing HP-UX nm output, not binutils nm output, and
the expansion of the awk script ate the $2, which HP-UX awk seems to
be OK with, but gawk chokes.  If these were really problems I fixed
them, otherwise I beg forgiveness :-)
