This gets us so far as having a usable sash prompt on the 712 in about 25%
of the cases (for the rest, we just die in some interruption handling routine,
but pb's / ftr's HPMC-catching efforts will soon allow us to debug this easily)

(I'll focus on developing for the 712 for the next week or so at least, because
it is just the kind of machine I'd expect Linux geeks to have)
