seems that current->times is always 0.  here's top:

    3 root      18  19     0    0     0 SWN   0.0  0.0   0:00 ksoftirqd_CPU0
...
even running a while(1) ; hog shows 0 time taken.  i suspect
update_process_times is not being called (ever).
