Using strace from http://mkhppa1.esiee.fr/en/download.html, on a narrow
kernel on c3000, the aforementioned command generated the kernel message:
User Fault (long pointer) pid=2153 command='fakeroot'
This is possibly a known problem with strace and fork and/or signals.
